Website design 2021

These days, not having a website is a bit like not having a pair of shoes. Idiotic.

Why?

What’s the first thing you do, when you learn about someone’s business you’re interested in? Check out their website. In case you don’t do that, start doing it, as it will tell you a lot about the person and their business.

I get that it’s overwhelming. The cost, the tech, the fear of being visible, the panic about what to actually put on it. I find that especially for yoga teachers and holistic practitioners the tech side of the business can be particularly scary.

With all things complicated, and website design can be complicated for sure, I want to break it down into small achievable chunks.

Web design tips and tricks

All you need to start out with is one single page as a website… That’s right, just one. You can tell your future clients all they need to know on that page.

Keeping that in mind, it already feels less scary and easier, right? You can always add more later.

Let’s get started. Here are the things you need to get up and running for a one page website.

The Domain/Hosting is key for a website designer

The first thing you need is a domain and hosting. It’s like a house and the land it stands on. The land is where you will find your house (aka domain) and the house has all your stuff in it (aka your actual website content). They both need to be connected to each other to work. If you want the more technical explanations.

What the domain should be is another question.Does your business have a unique name? Are you operating under your own name?

It can be difficult to figure this out, but take your time to think about it as it can be difficult down the line to change it.

Some pointers on what to look for though:

  1. Make it easy to type. …
  2. Keep it short. …
  3. Use keywords. …
  4. Target your area if your business is local
  5. Avoid numbers and hyphens. …
  6. Be memorable. …
  7. Use the appropriate domain name extension.

As for hosting there are a lot of different providers out there. Some better than others. I like supporting local companies as it’s sometimes easier to communicate with them.

Again there are some things you need to look out for when choosing it. We don’t like to think of worst case scenarios of having trouble with your website..but it happens and mostly on weekends so the following things will determine how fast you can get your website back up and running

  1. Support – is it 9-5 or 24/7
  2. Backup – Do they make regular backups you can quickly roll back to?
  3. Uptime Guarantuee – Do they have regular outages of service?
  4. Add-ons – Your hosting should have everything included such as email accounts, email forwarding, blog platform etc.

A Monaghan web designer will know that the Platform is vital

The most popular one is probably WordPress. Most hosting companies have a One-Click-Install option which sets it all up for you and you can start within minutes. It’s my favourite platform too as it’s so versatile and is able to grow with you and your business.

There is a slight learning curve involved in building your website, but it will be worth your while. Getting a good premium theme will make your life a lot easier as you can usually pre-load their demo content and simply need to change the content. Alternatively things like Thrive Themes Content Builder* are really easy to use with a free theme. You can simply drag and drop your page together as you wish.

Other good and very easy to use platforms are Squarespace, wix and Weebly. They are somewhat easier to use than WordPress and don’t require hosting. They do however have a lot of disadvantages when it comes to functionality, costs and setting the site up to be found on search engines.

A Web Designer who creates a great website? Content is still king!

For me, this is the fun part of a website. This is specifically looking at a one page website and not a full website with separate pages. Although you could easily translate these paragraphs into separate pages. For a very basic one pager website you only need 5 things:

A Paragraph to grab their attention and build connection with them.

Remember, this is the first thing they’ll read on your website. It’s your chance to build trust that you can be the person who helps them fix whatever is wrong with them and to build trust. This is particularly true when you’re a healer and work with delicate issues.

Unfortunately People don’t want to be presented with the end result but usually identify with their problems first. They tend not to see the forest for the trees as they’re so caught up in their problems. So make sure you tell them you know how they what they’re struggling with and how they feel. Present them with their problems…Asking questions or giving statements they can identify with. Here are some examples:

You are brilliant in what you’re doing and have great visions but are struggling to bring them to life.

You are overwhelmed by all the hats you have to wear as an entrepreneur?

You want to be empowered to all things social media related (even if eventually you choose not to!).

You pull out your hair and throw a tantrum whenever you have to think about websites or any other tech systems.

A Paragraph about you with picture

It’s time to show them how you specifically can solve their problems..I’m not taking CV like about you page. I’m talking a paragraph showing them how you can solve their problems. It’s all about making them see how your products/services will solve EXACTLY those problems you’ve identified….not only that though but also why YOU are the best person for the job…So here are the questions you need to answer for that section:

How exactly are you going to help them solve their problems? Who are you what makes you unique?

Also very important..Add a professional picture of you. I know it’s scary…but it’s an absolute must. People want to see who they would be working with. It builds trust and helps them to connect with you.

A Paragraph how you can help them / What services you offer

Here you can dive into the details of your services. What type of services do you offer? What are the costs involved. What are the benefits?

Call to action to book your services

A lot people stop at the above point and lose business. You really need to hold their hand and tell them what to do next. It’s called Call to Action. Tell them what you want them to do.

Do you want them to book in for a discovery call, book in to one of your classes or book in for your services? Make it easy for them to take the next step.

Contact + Social Media Section

Considering we’re looking at a one page website right now you need to include this into your page. Add a contact form, your contact details, how they can connect to you on social media. On a ‘regular’ website I would probably not add this in as you’d have your own page for this.

I hope this guide helps you get started with a website. I know how scary it can be, but once you break it down it gets easier. If you still don’t feel like you can do it, contact me here and I will see if I can help you out.
